San Diego County, California -The History

Today, San Diego County stands as California's second most populous county, but its history began thousands of years before European settlement. The region was originally home to the Kumeyaay, Luiseño, Cupeño, and Cahuilla Native American tribes, who established communities throughout what is now San Diego County.

European exploration began in 1542 when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed San Diego Bay for Spain. In 1769, Franciscan friar Junípero Serra established Mission San Diego de Alcalá, the first of 21 California missions. The San Diego Presidio, a military outpost, was established the same year, making San Diego the birthplace of European settlement in California.

After Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821, the missions were secularized and large ranchos were established throughout the county. Following the Mexican-American War, California became part of the United States, and San Diego County was one of the original counties created when California achieved statehood in 1850.

The region's growth accelerated in the late 19th century with the arrival of the transcontinental railroad and further expanded in the early 20th century with the establishment of military bases during World War I and World War II. The post-war period saw tremendous population growth and economic diversification, transforming San Diego County from a military town into the diverse region of technology, tourism, research, and defense that it represents today.
